Community Based Prevention For Adults

DPRC Prevention Specialists are available to deliver a substance abuse awareness and prevention message on a variety of informative, educational and entertaining topics via group presentations to Adult Populations in Polk, Hardee and Highlands counties.  Some of the Community Based Prevention Programs for Adults include:

Addiction (Inside the Addictive Personality)

Addiction has come to refer to a wide and complex range of behaviors.  In addition to familiar addictions, such as alcohol, drug, and smoking dependence, addictive behavior has also been associated with food, exercise, work, and even relationships with others (codependency).  This informative and eye-opening workshop will explore the intricacies of the addictive personality.

Anger Management
This presentation will: Provide information about the roots of anger and styles of coping with anger – Make the connection between anger and other emotional states – Encourage the understanding that anger-management can aid in recovery from mental health or substance use disorder – Raise the level of self-awareness – Review a variety of positive coping strategies that can be used to manage anger in healthy ways – Increase the comfort level in dealing with another person’s anger.

Assertiveness Training
Assertiveness is a philosophy for interacting with others.  Assertiveness is a way to ask for what a person needs, state difficult feelings such as anger and disappointment, and negotiate well with others.  Discussion includes:  Nonverbal Communication, Verbal Communication, Stress, Negotiation, Anger, and Fair Fighting.

Attitude and Goal Setting
One’s attitude did not happen overnight.  It is cultivated as the ups and downs of life are experienced.  Now it is a habit.  It’s time to take the single most important step toward attitude improvement and success.  This class focuses on evaluating our own attitudes, valuing and setting goals, and learning how to use affirmations for ourselves and others.

Domestic Violence

Society needs to know and understand that domestic violence is not a private matter. It is a critical, national problem that affects us all -- in every community, in every work place, and in every school.  Information covered will include:  Myths regarding domestic violence, having a safety plan, what individuals and communities can do, and more!

Media Literacy Prevention Program
This informative, educational program explores how media companies profit from selling unhealthy lifestyles to children and adolescents and focuses on the importance of educating parents and adults on the connection between the media, substance abuse and violence.

Mental Health and Substance Abuse

Topics discussed include: * What is mental health? * Recognizing the warning signs * How to cope day-to-day * Handling unusual behavior * Establishing support * Available resources, along with other valuable information.

Parent Pilot Kit Program

The Parent Pilot Kit helps parents and other caring adults see and understand the terrain that lies ahead in the teenage years by: *Viewing the world where today’s children reside * Taking responsibility for the social norms at home, school, and in the community * Building relationships between parent and child, and MUCH more!

Self-Esteem Building

How are feelings of self-esteem formed?  Once high self-esteem is developed, how is it kept?  Self-esteem is the value we choose to place on ourselves.  It is how we view ourselves, not how others view or value us.  Learn the types of self-esteem, the symptoms of an inferiority complex, self-concept areas, and more!

Stress Management Training

Stress related disorders cost American corporations and industries more than 150 billion dollars annually.  If you would like to start taking control of the stress in your life but are unsure where to begin, consider this informative, highly interactive workshop!

Suicide Awareness and Prevention

Suicide is not new. It is as old as humanity itself, and there have never been easy answers to why it happens. A complex set of factors, one building on another, apparently triggers this tragic response. In desperation, the suicide victim opts for a permanent solution to a temporary problem.  Learn the facts and myths along with ways to help others –OR- get them the help they need.

Team Awareness for the Workplace

This program uses a variety of interactive techniques including role-play, group interaction, visual aids, handouts and presentation to help promote teamwork and increase employee awareness of issues relating to workplace alcohol and other drug use and its consequences.

Tobacco Awareness, Education, and Cessation Programs

This comprehensive curriculum addresses healthy lifestyles, provides opportunities for self-assessment, and offers challenging assignments which help participants quit tobacco use.  Sessions involving lectures, videos, demonstrations, discussions, problem solving, and cooperative learning strategies are crucial in grabbing participants’ attention and motivating them to make healthy decisions about their lives.

Prevention Outreach Programs For Youth

Drug Free Puppet Shows
Puppet shows are an entertaining and educational way to present a drug prevention message to young children.  Animated puppets are used to teach drug prevention, home safety and other essential skills to pre-K – 3rd graders.  A more advanced show, appropriate for 4th -5th graders, utilizes child-like puppets to present issues concerning peer pressure as well as drug education.  These popular puppet shows are available to every school upon request in Polk, Hardee and Highlands Counties.

Science-Based Prevention At School
Project Alert, Keep A Clear Mind and Too Good For Drugs are alcohol, tobacco and other drug prevention model programs taught in upper elementary and middle schools.  Curriculum includes practicing use of resistance skills to face issues of peer pressure, conflict resolution, interpersonal communication and substance abuse through role-play and student interaction groups.  Keep A Clear Mind involves the family through take home projects.

Youth Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs Education Course
YTOD is a three-hour information and education course for youth ages 12-17, which focuses on drug prevention, youth peer pressure, good decision-making skills and major health issues related to alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.  There is a $15.00 registration fee.  Offered monthly in Lakeland and Lake Wales and may be available upon request in Hardee and Highlands counties.

Anger Management Course
Anger Management is a three-hour course for youth ages 12-17, which focuses on developing healthy and appropriate ways to express anger through role-play activities and class discussion.  There is a $15.00 registration fee.  Offered regularly in Lakeland and Winter Haven and may be available upon request in Hardee and Highlands counties.

5th Grade “Just Say No” Rally
A rally for Lakeland’s 5th Grade Students is held annually in May at The Lakeland Center to reinforce the “Just Say No to Drugs” message before students enter middle school.  A national motivational speaker delivers a special message to students encouraging a drug-free lifestyle and positive peer pressure.
